4A Football | Woodinville offense hits wall in loss
SPOKANE - Lewis and Clark’s special-teams play has been an adventure this season. “Trials and tribulations” is how coach Tom Yearout put it.
But the Tigers seemed to draw inspiration from a second-quarter gaffe in rallying to beat Woodinville 21-7 at Albi Stadium in a Class 4A first-round football playoff game Saturday.
Lewis and Clark (8-2) will play Inglemoor (7-4) Saturday at Bothell’s Pop Keeney Stadium in the quarterfinals.
A bad Lewis and Clark punt snap and ensuing soccer-style kick off the turf bounced into the arms of onrushing Falcon Matt Brumfield, who returned it 60 yards for a second-quarter touchdown.
Trailing 7-0, the Tigers took over.
By the time Alex Shaw scored Lewis and Clark’s final touchdown with 3:12 left in the third quarter, the Tigers led in time of possession, 23 minutes to 10.
“It was a combination of us getting three-and-outs and converting our third downs,” said Yearout. “It seemed like we converted quite a few today.”
Lewis and Clark ran 58 plays to Woodinville’s 35 and held the ball for 31 of 48 minutes. The 10th-ranked Falcons (7-4) were limited to 29 yards on 17 carries and had only 117 total yards. The unranked Tigers had 312 total yards.
“They did a nice job of moving the chains,” said Woodinville coach Wayne Maxwell. “And they hit some key passes when they needed them.”
Shaw had 114 yards on 36 carries with two TDs, and Taylor Eglet completed his first nine passes and finished 13 of 14 for 168 yards and a score for Lewis and Clark.
